Divine Laws Are for Our Benefit “How I do love your law!” —PSALM 1. What is the prevalent attitude toward obedience to divine laws? OBEYING divine laws is not popular today. For many, deferring to an invisible higher authority seems pointless. In Leviathan Hobbes seems reluctant to affirm the divine origin of the law. His earlier () book, De Cive (The Citizen) (Hobbes, ), makes much more of the claim that natural laws, which human beings discover by reason, are also the commandments of God. Chapter IV of De Cive, for instance, is entitled “That the Law of Nature is a Divine.

Divine law, based on these two foundations, provides a definite means for evaluating human laws. Legal positivists, however, have no criterion for judging the appropriateness of a law other than the sense of a perceived or evolving need. As Christians, we can and must refer to divine law as the basis for declaring a human law just or unjust. The Divine Law of the Old Testament, or the Mosaic Law, is commonly divided into civil, ceremonial, and moral precepts. The civil legislation regulated the relations of the people of God among themselves and with their neighbors; the ceremonial regulated matters of religion and the worship of God; the moral was a Divine code of ethics.

Richard Hooker’s Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity is one of the great landmarks of Protestant theological literature, and indeed of English literature r, on account of its difficult and archaic style, it is scarcely read today.

The time has come to translate it into modern English so that Hooker may teach a new generation of churchmen and Christian leaders about law, reason. First of all, M, the Bible is not a book; it is a collection of books.

It is a human book because all books are human. They are composed by humans to be read by humans in human languages.

The stories, histories, poems, songs, etc. of the books testify to the relationship between humans and God, the divine. 4. The Bible is a divine book. It is inspired by God. 2 Timothy 3 – theopneustos – “God – breathed”.

The significance of “divine law” in Scripture is that it is an authoritative expression of the holy character and mind of God, and His revealed will with respect to human conduct.

One of the fundamental teachings of the Living Light Philosophy is that all our experiences are the effects of laws we establish with our thoughts, acts, and deeds.

It is, therefore, revealed. Laws are fundamentally based on punishment alone rather than on both reward and retribution. Man-made laws are enforced with compromise.

Some even advocate education rather than punishment. The Divine Law on the other hand avoids all of the above deficiencies. It has on the contrary the following strengths: It enjoys the authority of God Himself. Divine law is a fabrication. It may not have been intended as such, but with each religion, denomination, and sect choosing which portions of divine law really apply, and which portions can be safely ignored, divine law is about as definite as pol.
